Bear Defense: Avoidance, Awareness & Response
Spending time in bear country is one of the greatest experiences the Rocky Mountains have to offer—but it comes with responsibility. Our Bear Defense course is designed to give you the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills to safely recreate in grizzly and black bear habitat.
This course begins with the most effective form of bear defense: prevention. You'll learn how bears behave, how to identify signs of bear activity, avoid common mistakes that lead to encounters, and make smart decisions before you ever step onto the trail.
From there, we'll cover bear spray, firearms, and the strengths and limitations of each. Students will gain hands-on experience deploying bear spray, selecting appropriate defensive firearms, and developing the skills necessary to respond under stress should an encounter occur.
Whether you're hiking, backpacking, hunting, camping, fishing, or working in the backcountry, you'll leave with practical knowledge and realistic skills to help you make sound decisions when it matters most.
